Week 4 Moments

Here are some of my "aha" moments captured in the fourth week.

Happy in My Career

Quote:"First, how can I be sure that I’ll be happy in my career? Second, how can I be sure that my relationships with my spouse and my family become an enduring source of happiness? Third, how can I be sure I’ll stay out of jail? Though the last question sounds lighthearted, it’s not. Two of the 32 people in my Rhodes scholar class spent time in jail. Jeff Skilling of Enron fame was a classmate of mine at HBS. These were good guys—but something in their lives sent them off in the wrong direction. " (How Will You Measure Your Life?  Clayton M. Christensen)

Quote:“For me, having a clear purpose in my life has been essential. But it was something I had to think long and hard about before I understood it. When I was a Rhodes scholar, I was in a very demanding academic program, trying to cram an extra year’s worth of work into my time at Oxford. I decided to spend an hour every night reading, thinking, and praying about why God put me on this earth. That was a very challenging commitment to keep, because every hour I spent doing that, I wasn’t studying applied econometrics. I was conflicted about whether I could really afford to take that time away from my studies, but I stuck with it—and ultimately figured out the purpose of my life.” (How Will You Measure Your Life?  Clayton M. Christensen)

Quote:“If you want your kids to have strong self-esteem and confidence that they can solve hard problems, those qualities won’t magically materialize in high school. You have to design them into your family’s culture—and you have to think about this very early on. Like employees, children build self-esteem by doing things that are hard and learning what works.” (How Will You Measure Your Life?  Clayton M. Christensen)

Quote:“Look, I know that as a general rule, most people shouldn’t do this. But in this particular extenuating circumstance, just this once, it’s OK.” The marginal cost of doing something wrong “just this once” always seems alluringly low. It suckers you in, and you don’t ever look at where that path ultimately is headed and at the full costs that the choice entails. Justification for infidelity and dishonesty in all their manifestations lies in the marginal cost economics of “just this once.”  (How Will You Measure Your Life?  Clayton M. Christensen)

Quote: “The lesson I learned from this is that it’s easier to hold to your principles 100% of the time than it is to hold to them 98% of the time.”  (How Will You Measure Your Life?  Clayton M. Christensen)

Quote: “We also decided that humility was defined not by self-deprecating behavior or attitudes but by the esteem with which you regard others. Good behavior flows naturally from that kind of humility…. Generally, you can be humble only if you feel really good about yourself—and you want to help those around you feel really good about themselves, too.”  (How Will You Measure Your Life?  Clayton M. Christensen)

Quote: “The question is not one of managing time, but one of managing ourselves with the time we have. Each minute is a little thing and yet, with respect to our personal productivity, to manage the minute is the secret of success.”  (Little Things Are Important Elder Wirthlin)

Quote:“You must take proper care in your life to see that the little things regarding your personal life are in order. You must learn to care for your health and your mental well-being. Do you maintain proper exercise that will give you the extra energy and strength you need to do your daily labors? Are you wise in your diet? Do you eat foods that are good for your body? Do you think about things that keep your spirit strong and your attitude positive?”  (Little Things Are Important Elder Wirthlin)

Quote:“Our bodies are truly the result of what we eat, what we think about, and the exercise we receive. If we are not wise, these little things can soon cause major health problems that will limit our success and ability to serve.”  (Little Things Are Important Elder Wirthlin)

Quote:“I have learned that it is by serving that we learn how to serve. When we are engaged in the service of our fellowmen, not only do our deeds assist them, but we put our own problems in a fresher perspective. When we think more about others, there is less time to be concerned with ourselves. … God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other in the kingdom” (“Small Acts of Service,” Tambuli, December 1976).  (Little Things Are Important Elder Wirthlin)

Quote:“When creating our spiritual bodies, our Heavenly Father took great care to place in each of us every little potential of character, of compassion, joy, and of knowledge that we would need for our personal growth.”  (Little Things Are Important Elder Wirthlin)

Quote:“We should try to live every day with absolute faith, for we have learned in life that the Lord keeps his promises and watches over those who trust Him. He has been so good to all of us that we should have a strong belief that He must really love us in spite of our faults.”  (Little Things Are Important Elder Wirthlin)

Quote:“’Do what you love.  You will be better at it’- Francis Ford Coppola” (Do What You Love- Tom Kelley)

Quote:“What are you good at, what were you born to do and what will people pay you to do?  Think of this intersection.  Then think of who you want to work with.” (Do What You Love- Tom Kelley)

Quote:“Keep a lab notebook of yourself.  Record when you feel the best, the happiest, because that is really important.” (Do What You Love- Tom Kelley)

Quote:“Success is not necessarily about just working hard.  It’s about making right choices.” (Effective Choices, Not Longer Days- Jeff Hawkins)

Quote:“Any company can be turned into any size if you could just continue to make better decisions.” (Effective Choices, Not Longer Days- Jeff Hawkins)

Quote:When you are different you are going to go down one path or another.  It either breaks you or makes you bitter, or it is the thing that makes you stronger.” (Action Hero Sharon Mays)

Quote:“It is alright to not be like everyone else.  There is something to be said for believing in yourself, in trusting yourself.” (Action Hero Sharon Mays)

Quote:“It takes that belief in yourself and in your business to get up everyday and keep doing it.” (Action Hero Sharon Mays)

Quote:“The only person to hold you back is yourself.” (Action Hero Sharon Mays)

Thoughts:  This week held much needed messages for me.  Several spoke about finding happiness in what you do.  I believe I have found the thing that I am good at and have found happiness in doing but tend to lack the confidence that it is enough to build a business on.  This is why Sharon Mays video was especially needed for me.  I am the one holding me back.  I need to follow her wise council to trust yourself.  I know I have the talent and others have encouraged me to follow this path.  It is critical that I believe in myself so I have the fight and drive within me to "get up everyday" as Sharon Mays put it.
